If I could,
how would I change my school ?
Nature’s residence:
I would love to see my school
thronged with trees and covered by grassy lawns. If I am given the opportunity
to change my school, my school would be a place which hijacks the thoughts of
students and would give them an awesome feeling of being a butterfly in a
beautiful garden. My school will be an evidence for nature to have a place on
Earth forever.
Emotional outlet period (EOLP) :
I would add an extra period in the timetable called EOLP – ‘Emotional outlet period’ where boys are taken to separate block and are allowed to dance to the extreme. The same applies for girls. It would stand as the best place for them to pour out their emotions. ‘Cry if you want to, shout or laugh if you wish doing that’ would be the motto of EOLP period.
Classroom Paradise:
Ordinary classrooms will
become paradise. Classrooms of my school would become epicenters of
intellectual excellence.
Scientific labs:
I would design the labs in my school in the
form of a brain and just on entering the labs thinking would be induced. Works
in my school laboratories would make students ponder about the same even in
lavatories.  A computer lab with
centralized AC would stand as a magnetic part of my school. It would keep
children updated with the world of ever-growing technology.  I would install audio-visual theatres for
better learning because most children are audio/visual learners. I would create
opportunities for children to present seminars in the form of symposiums. There
would be a science park that has playing instruments and it would explain the
basic principles in science. Science with fun! How good is that?
Brobdingnagian library:
A brobdingnagian library with thousands of
books to elucidate the doubts of students always stands as an integral
component of my dream school. My school’s library would be an island in the
middle of a vast sea of ignorance. It would be a place where children lower
their voices and raise their minds.
Mammoth auditorium:
A gigantic auditorium with a
fantabulous false sealing and with adequate lighting would be one of the
highlighting elements of the school. The stage there would have the potential
to produce orators with no stage fear and it would elevate buried talents.  An Amphitheatre just at the back of the auditorium
would be the best place for annual day function.
Glorious swimming pool
A swimming pool inside the campus would
differentiate my school from that of the others. So, my next plan would be to
create swimming pools. One pool for the tiny tots and the other one for the
older children. The former would be less deep and the later be designed for
intra school swimming competitions. It should be covered by grass on either
side marked with sitting benches where non-swimmers can sit and enjoy. A highly
trained and talented swimming master would be recruited.
Ban ties! :
Yet another important change
that I would like to bring in would be changing my school uniforms. Full hand
shirt, a tie threatening your throat and a black shoe absorbing heat makes you
completely uncomfortable. Short hand shirts, no ties and a sports shoe/slippers
would be a better choice.
School heads (Executive council of the school):
Criteria for selecting the
school captain shouldn’t be just on the basis of the marks obtained. Written
and face to face interviews to check the leadership qualities of children must
be held every year and more importantly everyone must have the chance to
participate in the interviews and exams. The top 5 must be selected and an
election must be held. The person who wins this election will be selected as
the school captain; the runner-up will be the vice-captain, the third person
becomes the cultural secretary and the fourth winner get the chance of becoming
the press coordinator. Based on the voting in classes, ‘Prefects’ will be
selected to assist the executive council.
Diminution in class strength:
Reduce the class strength from
60 to 30 because when quantity get the first priority, quality is completely
lost and sometimes teachers don’t even know the name of few students in the
class even at the end of the year.
Offering lockers:
Another innovative initiative
would be to provide lockers to students where they can place their books that aren’t
necessary for that day and prevent their school bags from becoming as heavy as
gunny bags containing rice.
No punishments; extra freedom:
Punishing and caning children has become a
major problem in my school. In case I have the chance of changing my school,
there would be no canes in my school and children will get enough freedom to
talk to teachers with confidence. Another annoying thing in my school is that
children are asked to salute to greet teachers and folding hands before
teachers is said to be a sign of discipline. I would love to abolish these age
old practices because activities like folding hands creates inferiority complex
within the student community.
Change the mode of teaching:
The mode of teaching must be
changed. Teachers teach only using a white chalk and a black board. No other
aids are used. Role-plays, group discussions, seminars, symposiums, debates,
extempore make learning easier, simpler, better and interesting. The happenings
in classrooms must produce way to create avid people. Teachers will not just be
tutors teaching lessons given in textbooks. They will take up an important duty
of moulding up the character of children and preparing them to face life. Teaching
must be a two way process.
Dutiful clubs:
Anti-bullying clubs,
consisting of the school executive council and teachers will look out for
people bullying and they will be counseled by senior teachers. An eco-club that
creates awareness in the minds of children about the importance to conserve
energy will be created.
Grandness to co-curricular activities:
CCA – ‘Co-curricular activities’ will be given
importance. Extempore, art, music, dance, essay writing, article writing,
debate, origami competitions will be conducted.
Sports play a significant part:
Separate grounds for cricket,
football, hockey, badminton, squash, table tennis and basketball will form the sure
components of my school. The time table will be scheduled such that there are
‘games periods’ on all days from 3.30 p.m to 4.30 p.m.
Inter-house matches:
The school must completely be
divided into four or more teams and inter house competitions like cricket,
basketball, football matches should be conducted. Points may be offered to the
teams and a rolling trophy will be provided as a token of appreciation to the
winning team.
Classtime :
On working Saturdays, each
class will have to perform a programme on a specific topic that they can select
of their own. The programme can be done in any form – Role play, dance, music,
etc… or can be a combination of everything. It will be importantly seen that
every student from the class participates in it. The class teacher or no other
teacher will interfere in making this programme. The students solely will have
to do it. It will develop the organizing talent in children.
Thus, my school will be one of
the best schools, not just in my city, but in the entire state. Students of
this school will lay down the path for India’s glory in the upcoming years.
Expecting the above in
reality!!!!!!!!!
